Incredible, large, three-dimensional mid 20th century modernist
sterling pendant with a wonderful braided leather cord; pendant
is almost 6" long overall x 3" wide (at the widest section); cord is
about 17-3/'4" total with an ingenious clasp (see picture below);
the signature on the reverse looks like "A. Behore"--it's
hard to decipher.
There is a raised design on the pendant that almost looks like
something from a Picasso painting, but friends of mine suggested
that it may be Hebrew letters or, perhaps, an abstracted image of
the 13th century Turkish folk hero Hodja. This philosopher is
well known throughout the entire Middle East and is often shown
riding his donkey backwards. So if the pendant's design is based
on this figure, the "cryptic" lettering within the design could be
Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, or Farsi.
