Great rare copper cuff by American mid 20th-century jeweler Art Smith; approximately 2" wide (at the widest section); inside diameter about 2-1/4"; marked: "Art Smith" (in script); great patina; fine condition.

The design of the cuff undulates like a jazz tune and five applied brass eighth notes dance on a curving staff of five lines and four spaces--perhaps they are the first five notes of a jazz tune. Art Smith made cufflinks for Duke Ellington with the first five notes of Mood Indigo. "When former customers talked about Art Smith, they remembered interesting conversations in the studio at the back of the shop, how he would always offer them a snack, and how the radio was always playing jazz."
