Dean Schwarz was a student of Ruth Roach at
the University of Northern Iowa. He later became a faculty member
and chair at Luther College in Decorah Iowa. He retired in 1964 to
devote his time to pottery. He studied with Marguerite Wildenhain
who was a great influence on his work.
Dean now works with his son, Gunnar. Their philosophy in
making pottery honors the potters of the past who strove to express
themselves through signature works. The artists' goal is to enrich lives
conversant with the pots they create.
The father-son Schwarz partnership have work in collections around the
world including a Museum of Art and Culture, China; Pottery Museum,
Japan; University of Botswana, Africa; University of Nottingham,
England; Stavanger College, Norway and two museums in Germany. In the
states their work is in The White House Collection, the University of
Alaska, St. Lawrence University and the University of Wisconsin among
many others. Some of the Iowa collections in which they are represented
are the Charles H. MacNider Museum, Waterloo Municipal Galleries, and
the Dubuque Museum of Art.
