Dean Schwarz was a student of Ruth Roach at the University of Northern Iowa.  He later became a faculty member and chair at Luther College in Decorah Iowa. He retired in 1964 to devote his time to pottery. He studied with Marguerite Wildenhain  who was a great influence on his work.

Dean now works with his son, Gunnar. Their philosophy in making pottery honors the potters of the past who strove to express themselves through signature works. The artists' goal is to enrich lives conversant with the pots they create.
