J. Tostrup was founded in 1832 in Oslo,
Norway. In the 19th Century they were known for their beautiful
"champleve" and "plique
a jour" enamels. Grete Prytz Kittlesen designed for J. Tostrup in the 1940s and 1950s. She was the great-granddaughter of Torolf
Prytz
who was the company's production manager at the turn of the
century. She occupies a prominent place in the history of
Norwegian enameling on precious metals. From the 1940s and
throughout the 20th century, her innovative approach led this art in a new and rewarding direction. Her
designs are sought after by collectors for their unique form of
modernism. Kittlesen died in 2010. |

Niels
Erik From was born in Denmark in 1908
and trained as a silversmith. He opened
a shop in 1931 from which he also sold
some of his designs, but the N.E.From
smithy is first registered in Nakskov in
1944. His son-in-law Hilmer Jensen
joined the management team in 1960, and
took over the firm in 1986 after Niels
Erik's death. The company closed few
years later.
There are
two distinct styles in the From
production. The sinewy foliage and
floral pieces were designed by Niels
Erik From and characterise the early
years of production, whereas the bold
modernist pieces were introduced by
another designer in the 1960s.

Silversmith, George
Jensen (1866-1935) founded his company in 1904 in Copenhagen.
Because of his astute business skills and excellent sense of design,
he experienced success early-on and, by 1910, the year that he won a
gold medal at the Brussels Expo, he was already exporting his
jewelry to London and Paris.
His early work was in the
skonvirke style, often in high relief with moonstones, lapis,
amber, coral, garnet, etc. The company continued after
Jensen's death and produced jewelry in many different styles by some
of the best Scandinavian designers.
The name "Georg Jensen" in
synonymous with quality and jewelry from every decade is highly
collectible. |

The Scholtz & Lammel firm was founded in Idar-Oberstein (Germany), a
town primarily known for gem-cutting. Designer Sigrid Gottstein
created geometric designs for pendants, rings with adjustable
shanks, link bracelets, and cufflinks. Until recently, the "S" in a
circle maker's mark was assumed to belong to Karl Schibenski. We now
know that he was a goldsmith who worked in Idar, but never designed
matte enamel. Scholtz & Lammel paper tags proclaimed (in German,)
"fire enamel, veritable hand-crafted." Sometimes, but not always,
the "S" in circle mark was found on the clear enamel base. Bracelets
were either rigid bangles or hinged segments. From:
French vs. Germany, Modernist Enamel Jewelry, 1930 - 1970,
MODERN SILVER magazine, 2007.

wonderful, matte enamel jewelry is widely collected. |

Model wearing Bjorn Weckstrom bracelet and "Space Apple" necklace -
see below |
|
Bjorn Weckstrom is an internationally recognized sculptor/jeweler. He
won the Lunning Prize in 1968. His "sculptural jewelry plays with volumes and surfaces, alternating the light reflections on
shiny and matt silver." One of his space series pieces, a necklace titled
"Planetary Valleys" was worn by Princess Leila in the 1977 "Star Wars"
movie. Weckstrom's work has been featured in museum shows in many countries.
His gold pieces are also extraordinary--he
returns the gold to the look of raw nuggets. Each piece is a miniature
sculpture, an art form within itself.
