Pair of heavy, shallow stoneware bowls by American studio potter, Myrton Purkss; ca. 1950s; coffee-colored accents with slightly raised turquoise center over a tan crackle glaze; wheel-thrown; approximately 5-3/4" diameter x 1-1/4" high; brushed on bottom of each bowl: "M. PURKISS, FULLERTON, CALIF."  one small flake in the glaze on the rim of each piece, no cracks or chips.

Myrton Purkiss' work is part of the collection of the Everson Museum of Art and is picture in the book "American Ceramics."  He was originally from Canada, born in Victoria, British Columbia and attended the University of Southern California and Chouinard Art Institute. He did research and in England and and France. He participated in the Ceramic National in 1941, and from 1947 through 1952.  In 1952, he served as a member of the jury in Los Angeles.
