Baltimore, Maryland jeweler, Lauren Schott is inspired by luster, textures, and surfaces of platinum and high carat gold and the subtle ways in which the metal contrasts with other elements in her jewelry, such as diamonds, ancient coins and South Sea pearls. She combines these materials to create pieces that are beautifully and simply modern, but yet hearken back to ancient times.

Schott studied art in Detroit, Michigan at Rochester Community College and jewelry-making at The Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts.  She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Jewelry Making from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1979.  She has taught at such prestigious institutions as the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, Maryland.  She has exhibited widely in museum and gallery shows.

Los Angeles based jeweler, Joseph Gatto has been successful in many disciplines, including jewelry making, sculpture, drawing, and photography.

I can't begin to list all his accomplishments as an artist, teacher, and writer. He has taught jewelry making at California State University, Northridge; drawing at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena; and was dean of the Visual Arts Department at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. He holds a master's degree in Design and Art Education from California State University, Los Angeles.

Gatto has earned numerous honors, again too many to mention here, but he received a distinguished teacher award from the city of Los Angeles in 2003, and went to the White House in 1988, 1989, and 1998 where he was the recipient of the National Distinguished Teacher Award.

His versatility as an artist and educator is evident in the eight books he has written on various art subjects, in addition to the many curriculum guides on jewelry, painting, drawing, and photography he has written for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Reiko Ishiyama was raised on the island of Shikoku, Japan amid traditional artisans and craftspeople, which of whom, greatly inspired and influenced her career in metals. Predominately self taught, Reiko creates airy, light and flexible pieces of jewelry that are carefully hammered into shape. She works mostly with silver and gold in her studio in New York City.

Gina Pankowski's career in contemporary jewelry was decided when she wandered into the metal arts studio at the University of Washington, and the classroom of Mary Lee Hu. Boris Bally is a highly celebrated contemporary metalsmith whose work is in numerous private and museum collections. He worked early-on as an industrial designer and was inspired by machinery and discarded machine parts. In One of A Kind, American Art Jewelry Today, author Susan Grant   Lewin says that "Bally has translated his interest in unfriendly machinery into engaging works that make intimate claims on the wearer. While their machinelike precision and clinical perfection give his works a dangerous and threatening edge, they draw the viewer in with intriguing construction....." (pg. 72). 

Bally wrote in an email that he was very fond of this piece and "remembered it well." He said that the idea was "sort of a clamp and eventually led up to the piece "Arachnid" which the Museum of Art & Design has in its permanent collection......"

Since 1976 she has exhibited her jewelry in major shows throughout the world.  Her work is in the collections of many museums including the Arts & Crafts Museum in Copenhagen and the Danish Arts Foundation and she has won many significant awards and prizes for her jewelry.

She is a member of Danish Arts and Craftsmen and was chair of that organization until 1997.

Sam Patania, as the third generation of Patania artisans, has followed very much in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him.  In 1969, at the age of ten, he began his apprenticeship at the Tucson Thunderbird Shop.  For the next decade, his after-school training would be a major part of his daily routine.  But Sam followed his own path, too, having sought instruction outside the traditions of the shop.  In his 1977-78 school year, Sam enrolled in a jewelry-making course at Catalina High School where he....explored new approaches to his craft.  In 1979, he became a full-time employee of the Thunderbird Shop.  Feeding his need for knowledge he would attend the University of Arizona in 1988-89, where he met jewelry instructor Michael Croft.

I consider myself a three dimensional animator. My goal is to use the finest material both new and old to create functional and non-functional curiosities.  I look to the work of old drawing from, the Arts and Crafts movement, Folk Art, Modernism and the beginnings of the American Studio Movement and its contemporaries all around the globe.   The finished pieces look as though they may be old but are curiously 21^st Century.  I search in unobvious places for materials such as antler, recycled copper (including existing patina), scraps of various woods – (exotic and not so), European Laminate, plus anything else that I notice a certain “richness” – to include in my work.  Recycled materials are more or less a constant.  I also use traditional commercially available materials such as Sterling, Fine Silver, Copper, Brass, Bronze, and high carat gold, among others.

Jeanine Payer is a San Francisco jeweler who hand-engraves poetry onto precious metals. Her international following includes Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon, Mick Jagger and Johnny Depp. Payer has also worked closely to design custom pieces for Meg Ryan, Seal, Sheryl Crow, and Debra Messing.

Joanna Kao lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents came to the U.S. from China in the mid 1930s.  Her work has been shown in exhibits throughout the world including Jingdezhen Ceramic Arts Institute in Jiangxi, China, the Hankuk Art Museum in YoungIn, South Korea, the Zhejiang Art Academy in Hangzhou, China, and the Public Libraries of Boston and Newton. Most recently, my work was selected for exhibition in "Transplants," a group show at the Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia. I have also shown work in "Progress of the World's Women, Beijing +5," at the UN General Assembly, and group shows at the Kala Institute in Berkeley, CA; the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, school art galleries such as that of UMass Boston, and community art centers.

In "Art Jewelry Today" by Donna Meilach, it states that Joanna Kao's jewelry "reflects emotional responses to events in her life." This three-dimensional design may have meaning for all of us--a plant grows (anyway) in the midst of a "concrete jungle." The brooch is 1-5/8" x 1-1/8" x 1/2" deep; inscribed: "J. Great modern design ring of double-sided emerald cut crystal in two sterling bezels; design is continued with the split band; top section is approximately 5/8" square x 1/2" deep; ring is slightly under 6-1/2; marked: "925, CL;" fine condition.
