While their machinelike precision and clinical perfection give his works a dangerous and threatening edge, they draw the viewer in with intriguing construction....." (pg. 72).

Bally wrote in an email that he was very fond of this piece and "remembered it well." He said that the idea was "sort of a clamp and eventually led up to the piece "Arachnid" which the Museum of Art & Design has in its permanent collection......"

Fred Zweig is a practicing self taught metalsmith with a passion for process. "I design with process in mind and the careful use of my media, he says. "I have been doing this since the '70s and love every minute of it. I have taught adult classes for over 20yrs and now only do workshops. I consider myself a 'hammerman' and have little interest in other processes due to a limited lifespan. So much to learn and so little time. Forging, raising, repoussage, and fabrication are the routes I use to reach my design." (from http://www.artmetal.com/blog/fred_zweig)

Sydney Lynch grew up in rural Connecticut and moved west after working at a school on the Navajo Reservation. She completed her BFA in 1973 at the University of Colorado, then proceeded to design and make jewelry in her home studio, and successfully developed a following.

Her jewelry combines bold, simple, sculptural shapes to create a dynamic of tension and balance. She uses textures and surface patterns for tactile and visual interest. Her personal interests are reflected in her work: the natural forms of rocks and seashells that she has collected since childhood, the intriguing shapes she finds in weathered areas of the city. She’s also interested in tribal and ancient jewelry and this too is reflected in her work.

Sam Patania, as the third generation of Patania artisans, has followed very much in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him.  In 1969, at the age of ten, he began his apprenticeship at the Tucson Thunderbird Shop.  For the next decade, his after-school training would be a major part of his daily routine.  But Sam followed his own path, too, having sought instruction outside the traditions of the shop.  In his 1977-78 school year, Sam enrolled in a jewelry-making course at Catalina High School where he....explored new approaches to his craft.  In 1979, he became a full-time employee of the Thunderbird Shop.  Feeding his need for knowledge he would attend the University of Arizona in 1988-89, where he met jewelry instructor Michael Croft.

Sam tries to keep within the traditions with which he was raised, honoring his father and grandfather, and other artisans as well, including well-known silver designer William Spratling.

Sam’s personal philosophy as a jewelry artist reflects this aesthetic: “A desire to learn drives my work,” he says. “New techniques, symmetry, asymmetry, materials—all are areas which continue to drive my designs.  Color captures my eye and the thought of the beautiful women who will wear my work keeps me inspired.”

Sam’s talents shine like his one-of-a-kind creations, such as the one which is currently in the permanent jewelry collection of the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.. And his work is also on display at the old Thunderbird Shop—now renamed “Patania Sterling Silver Originals,” to honor the creative spirit that has earmarked this family’s heritage for three generations.  The strength and character of the Patania name and tradition show no sign of weakening—doubtlessly, this is a family whose standard of excellence will survive and thrive well into both the future and history alike. David Jones received his Bachelor of Fine Arts/Crafts degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Kutztown and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Jewelry and Metalsmithing at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.  He has been studying at the Penland School of Crafts from 1988 to the present and has participated in many exhibitions throughout the United States and other countries such as a One Person Show ,"American Folk" in Asheville, North Carolina, 2000; an International Traveling Show in Sweden, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Stockholm, 1999 into early 2000; "ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS" at the Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco, 2001; "Once and Again" at the OXOXO Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, 2001; S.O.F.A. in New York City with Gallery 500, 2001; and many more.

He is represented by numerous prestigious galleries and is in demand for commission work.

Here is his part of his artist's statement:

I consider myself a three dimensional animator. My goal is to use the finest material both new and old to create functional and non-functional curiosities.  I look to the work of old drawing from, the Arts and Crafts movement, Folk Art, Modernism and the beginnings of the American Studio Movement and its contemporaries all around the globe.   The finished pieces look as though they may be old but are curiously 21st Century.  I search in unobvious places for materials such as antler, recycled copper (including existing patina), scraps of various woods – (exotic and not so), European Laminate, plus anything else that I notice a certain “richness” – to include in my work.  Recycled materials are more or less a constant.  I also use traditional commercially available materials such as Sterling, Fine Silver, Copper, Brass, Bronze, and high carat gold, among others.
