Baltimore, Maryland jeweler, Lauren Schott is inspired by luster, textures, and surfaces of platinum and high carat gold and the subtle ways in which the metal contrasts with other elements in her jewelry, such as diamonds, ancient coins and South Sea pearls. She combines these materials to create pieces that are beautifully and simply modern, but yet hearken back to ancient times. Schott studied art in Detroit, Michigan at Rochester Community College and jewelry-making at The Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Jewelry Making from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1979. She has taught at such prestigious institutions as the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. She has exhibited widely in museum and gallery shows. She chooses to create jewelry that complements the body it is designed to adorn. |

Los Angeles based jeweler, Joseph Gatto has been successful in many disciplines, including jewelry making, sculpture, drawing, and photography. I can't begin to list all his accomplishments as an artist, teacher, and writer. He has taught jewelry making at California State University, Northridge; drawing at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena; and was dean of the Visual Arts Department at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. He holds a master's degree in Design and Art Education from California State University, Los Angeles. Gatto has earned numerous honors, again too many to mention here, but he received a distinguished teacher award from the city of Los Angeles in 2003, and went to the White House in 1988, 1989, and 1998 where he was the recipient of the National Distinguished Teacher Award. His versatility as an artist and educator is evident in the eight books he has written on various art subjects, in addition to the many curriculum guides on jewelry, painting, drawing, and photography he has written for the Los Angeles Unified School District. please see MODERN SILVER magazine, Fall/Winter 2012, Interview with Joseph Gatto |

New York jeweler, Vinnie Miller
takes her inspiration from American studio jewelry of the mid 20th
century. Like Calder, she hammers and twists her metals—creating
beautiful objects without using solder. She says,
“Imagination is not the same as creativity. Creativity takes the
process of imagination to another level. To be creative you
actually have to do something. It involves putting your imagination
to work to make something new.” |

Boris Bally is a highly celebrated contemporary metalsmith whose work is in numerous private and museum collections. He worked early-on as an industrial designer and was inspired by machinery and discarded machine parts. In One of A Kind, American Art Jewelry Today, author Susan Grant Lewin says that "Bally has translated his interest in unfriendly machinery into engaging works that make intimate claims on the wearer. While their machinelike precision and clinical perfection give his works a dangerous and threatening edge, they draw the viewer in with intriguing construction....." (pg. 72). Bally wrote in an email that he was very fond of this piece and "remembered it well." He said that the idea was "sort of a clamp and eventually led up to the piece "Arachnid" which the Museum of Art & Design has in its permanent collection......" Her work has been on exhibition at several prestigious museums and galleries around the country and is "sought-after by collectors with an eye for the best in new and upcoming young artists. " Yumi is the recipient of several awards; most notably 'best of show' award at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art at the ACC show in San Francisco. Paul Klee was a big influence on Yumi's developing aesthetic sensibility, and Wendy Ramshaw is the jewelry-artist that she credits as having the most impact on her career and direction as an artist-jeweler. Yumi sees her work as an expression of the mysterious and primeval forces of nature, such as "light, wind, space, and time." Fred Zweig is a practicing self taught metalsmith with a passion for process. "I design with process in mind and the careful use of my media, he says. "I have been doing this since the '70s and love every minute of it. I have taught adult classes for over 20yrs and now only do workshops. I consider myself a 'hammerman' and have little interest in other processes due to a limited lifespan. So much to learn and so little time. Forging, raising, repoussage, and fabrication are the routes I use to reach my design." (from http://www.artmetal.com/blog/fred_zweig) |

It makes for a very tactile piece. The contrast of the hematite is perfect for my work." SOLD (item #C812) |

Kiwon Wang says, " My jewelry combines eastern tradition and western modernity in objects that adorn the body through contrast, tension, absence and presence.....My jewelry is like a journal. It reflects all of my six senses and is the physical representation of my body and soul expressed in metals and pearls." Kiwon Wang's work is an artistic interplay of material, form, method, technique and literature. As an Easterner living in the west, Wang particularly likes to use pearls, long associated with the east and symbolic of the universe. (from http://www.guild.com/artist/5632.html) Kiwon Wang received her BFA in Jewelry
Design and Silversmithing at Georgia State University in Atlanta and her
MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence (where she taught

"Tana Acton utilizes textile techniques in metal, wrapping silver or gold-filled wire over a sculptural framework, sometimes incorporating gemstone beads or pearls in her bracelets and rings. She studied metalworking in the 70's, explored modern dance, and fashion design over the years, and all these disciplines have given her a vocabulary with which to work." Movement, air and light are used to create pieces that are at once delicate, yet solid, organic yet sharply contemporary." Sydney Lynch grew up in rural Connecticut and moved west after working at a school on the Navajo Reservation. She completed her BFA in 1973 at the University of Colorado, then proceeded to design and make jewelry in her home studio, and successfully developed a following. Her jewelry combines bold, simple, sculptural shapes to create a dynamic of tension and balance. She uses textures and surface patterns for tactile and visual interest. Her personal interests are reflected in her work: the natural forms of rocks and seashells that she has collected since childhood, the intriguing shapes she finds in weathered areas of the city. She’s also interested in tribal and ancient jewelry and this too is reflected in her work. from http://www.williamzimmergallery.com/artist_info/sydney_lynch.html Lynch is one of the jewelers featured in Art Jewelry Today by Dona Z. Sam Patania, as the third generation of Patania artisans, has followed very much in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him. In 1969, at the age of ten, he began his apprenticeship at the Tucson Thunderbird Shop. For the next decade, his after-school training would be a major part of his daily routine. But Sam followed his own path, too, having sought instruction outside the traditions of the shop. In his 1977-78 school year, Sam enrolled in a jewelry-making course at Catalina High School where he....explored new approaches to his craft. In 1979, he became a full-time employee of the Thunderbird Shop. Feeding his need for knowledge he would attend the University of Arizona in 1988-89, where he met jewelry instructor Michael Croft. Sam tries to keep within the traditions with which he was raised, honoring his father and grandfather, and other artisans as well, including well-known silver designer William Spratling. Sam’s personal philosophy as a jewelry artist reflects this aesthetic: “A desire to learn drives my work,” he says. “New techniques, symmetry, asymmetry, materials—all are areas which continue to drive my designs. Color captures my eye and the thought of the beautiful women who will wear my work keeps me inspired.” Sam’s talents shine like his one-of-a-kind creations, such as the one which is currently in the permanent jewelry collection of the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.. And his work is also on display at the old Thunderbird Shop—now renamed “Patania Sterling Silver Originals,” to honor the creative spirit that has earmarked this family’s heritage for three generations. The strength and character of the Patania name and tradition show no sign of weakening—doubtlessly, this is a family whose standard of excellence will survive and thrive well into both the future and history alike. (taken directly from "Patania: 70 Years of Excellence, Part II" by Shari Watson Miller, MODERN SILVER magazine, April - May, 2001) (See also, An Interview with Sam Patania by Marbeth Schon, MODERN SILVER magazine, Fall/Winter 2009) and read Sam's blog at http://patania-jewelry.ganoksin.com/blogs/ |
