MODERNIST JEWELRY |
FORM
& FUNCTION |
| I am pleased to present
two major works: Modernist
Jewelry 1930 - 1960, The Wearable Art Movement. and
Form & Function, American Modernist Jewelry, 1940 - 1970. My first book, Modernist Jewelry, 1930 - 1970, The Wearable Art Movement (published by Schiffer in 2004) explores the work of American studio jewelers through four pivotal exhibitions held at the Museum of Modern Art (1946) and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (1948, 1955, 1959), and studies its major design influences: the German Bauhaus; the movements in the fine arts such as Cubism, Constructivism, and Surrealism; and the extraordinary transformations in American society during the mid 20th century. My new book ,Form & Function, American Modernist Jewelry, 1940 - 1970, has just hit the market. It covers the history of the American Crafts movement in metals from 1940 - 1970 and has sections on materials, jewelry as art, techniques, over 100 biographies and a marks section. This book is a catalog for a major museum exhibit American Modernist Jewelry, 1940 - 1970, opening May 3, 2008 at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fort Wayne, Indiana and its collateral exhibit, The Modernist Movement and Beyond, The Works of Peter Macchiarini and Daniel Macchiarini, Earl Pardon and Tod Pardon at Saint Francis University in Fort Wayne. .Here are comments from some of the jewelers and others about my first book: I just got a copy of your book on modernist jewelry – it’s a wonderful resource! The biographies will be tremendously helpful. Kelly H.
