REYNOLDS BEAL, MIXED MEDIA ON PAPER, "SELLS FLUTO
CIRCUS, 1936
"Sells
Floto Circus", mixed media on paper by Reynolds
Beal, c. 1936; 16" x 17-1/2", matted to 18" x 29-1/2"; wonderful
American scene: children holding balloons and flags, playing baseball
,and pushing a pram, elephant, horse and circus wagon, banners with
clown and "Pin Heads"; fine condition; signed lower left" "Reynolds
Beal, 1936, Fells Floto Circus;" fine condition.
The Sells Floto Circus was a combination of
the Floto Dog & Pony Show and the Sells Brothers Circus that toured with
sideshow acts in the United States during the early 1900s.
Reynolds Beal (1867 - 1951) was a
prominent American painter in his day and his work is widely collected
today. He studied painting at William Merritt Chase's Shinnecock
Summer School in the 1890s. With his younger brother Gifford Beal (also
a painter), H. Dudley Murphy and Childe Hassam, Beal painted and
traveled, going to Europe to study with Henry Ward Ranger.
In 1919 he was selected with Hassam, Glackens and other prestigious
painters to exhibit at the Luxembourg in Paris. He exhibited at the
Clauson Gallery (NY) and Kraushaar Gallery (NY) as early as 1929 and by
1934 he was an active participant in the Salmagundi Club, Lotus Club,
Century Club, National Academy of Design and the American Water Color
Society. Considered a "modernist," he helped found the Society of
Independent Artists and the New Society of Artists with Bellows, Hassam,
Sloan, Glackens and Prendergast.
Beal used a variety of styles, including Impressionism and Tonalism, and
as he aged, his work became more complex and vibrant with a mosaic of
brush strokes. In addition to oils, he was admired as a watercolorist,
and he, along with Gifford, made Rockport, Massachusetts their home. His
studio overlooked Rockport's Inner Harbor, from where he drew and etched
many harbor scenes. After the late 1920s, Beal was stricken with an
illness and ceased to produce many paintings. His most prolific artistic
period falls between 1910 - 1920. Beal died in 1951.

"LES VASES," CUBIST ETCHING BY JACQUES VILLON, French, 1875 -
1963 A wonderful, original,
pencil signed etching by French artist, Jacques Villon,
titled "Les Vases;" plate
size bout 8-1/4" x 6-1/4"; matted to approximately 20" x 15"; signed in
plate: "Jacque Villon, '50" and pencil signed: "Jacques Villon;" fine
condition.
Villon, Jacques (Gaston
Duchamp) (1875-1963) was the brother of Marcel Duchamp,
Raymond Duchamp Villon and Suzanne Duchamp. He began his
career in art in 1894, in Paris, where he earned a
living as a draughtsman, producing drawings for
magazines such as Le Chat noir, Gil Blas, Lassiette
au Beurre and Le Courrier franqais. In 1904 he
became a founder member of the Salon d'Automne, in which
he regularly exhibited. In 1912 he helped to organize
the Section d'Or exhibition, and in 1913 took
part in the International Exhibition of Modern Art (the
Armory Show) in New York, at which he sold nine
pictures. Between 1921 and 1930 he produced thirty-four
prints for Architectures.
In 1937 he won an award for
painting and graphic art at the International Exhibition
of Art in Paris; in 1940-1 he was in Bernay with Mme
Andre Maren 1944 he became friendly with Louis Carre and
exhibited in his gallery. In 1949 he won the Grand Prix
for graphic art in Lugano, and in 1950 took part in the
Twenty fifth Biennale in Venice, and won the Carnegie
Prize in Pittsburgh. In 1954 he was made Commandeur de
la Legion d' Honneur and Commandeur des Arts et Lettres.
In 1956 he won the Grand Prix for painting at the
Twenty-eighth Biennale in Venice and in 1958 the Grand
Prix at the International Exhibition in Brussels. In
1961 he was made an honorary member of the American
Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute
of Arts and Letters in the United States.
During his early period,
when he worked primarily as a draughtsman and etcher,
Villon was influenced by Steinlen and Toulouse-Lautrec.
In 1906 he became more interested in painting, and
during the next five years took his lead from Degas and
the Fauves. Then, in 1911, he embraced Analytical
Cubism, which satisfied his need for order and
discipline. Subsequently, he tried to develop a new
style of painting based on mathematical proportions
corresponding to the golden section. Later, between 1919
and 1929, he painted abstracts, in which he sought to
represent the essence of objects by means of signs and
not properties. During this period he restricted his
palette to greys and browns. In 1930 he began to use
colours from the prismatic sequence of tones. After this
abstract phase Villon reverted, in 1933, to natural
forms and pure colours. In c. 1950 he stopped painting
landscapes and figure compositions, and evolved a new
and carefully thought-out form of abstract painting, for
which he used cool colours.

JOSEPH TRIPPETTI ENAMEL PAINTING ON METAL
Great, modernist enamel
on metal painting by Joseph Trippetti, c.
1950s-60s; approximately 9" x 7", mounted on wood and framed to about
11-1/2 x 9-3/4"; signed in enamel: "TRIPPETTI" lower right; fine
condition.
Born in 1923, Joseph
Trippetti, who was trained as both an artist and silversmith, is best
known for his work in enamels. He opened a studio in New Hampshire in
1951. His work was inspired by medieval imagery he had seen in
England while studying at the Sheffiled School of Arts and Crafts
in England. "Flattened, abstracted figures rendered in bold colors
became recurring motifs in his work." He later turned to cloisonné
as his preferred method. His work has won many prizes throughout
his career and is part of the collections of the Wichita Center of the
Arts; the Lowe Gallery, University of Miami; the Currier Museum of Art;
the New Hampshire Historical Society; and the Long Beach Museum of Art.

Nichols, originally a student of Dale Nichols, became his fourth wife.
They may have met in Tubac, Arizona where, in 1945, Nichols began an art

left in 1949. Marjorie Nichols returned to Tubac in 1959, where
she managed a gallery housed in one of the adobe buildings that her
husband had used for his school. In 1964 she arranged for a national
juried art fair in Tubac. She continued to live and work in a
studio next to the gallery in Tubac. Dale Nichols returned to
Tubac in 1989 at the age of 89. (information
